08/19: New course in winter term 2019
In winter term 2019 the E-Master-project provides an course called
Scandinavia in the Middle Ages
Main lecturer is Anja Blode (Institut für Skandinavistik/Fennistik, Universität zu Köln).
Course and lecture language: English
Description:
Do you want to know more about the Viking Age and the Scandinavian Middle Ages? Do you want to read Old Norse texts and transcribe some runes? Do you want to study within an international group of students?
This course offers an introduction to the Viking Age and the Scandinavian Middle Ages. What do we know about the Vikings and why did the Vikings raid other countries? In the following Middle Ages, the Christianisation finally prevailed and the Nordic kingdoms were consolidated, which were even temporarily united in a personal union. Politics and church were closely intertwined, but also the merchants and the Hanseatic League played an increasingly important role.
The four countries Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway will be covered during this course. The focus will not only be on history, but also on reading and discussing texts from the Nordic Middle Ages, e.g. saga texts, laws and chronicles. In study groups, individual topics will be discussed in more detail and later made available to the other course participants. For this purpose, different source groups will be discussed, e.g. texts will be transcribed, translated and interpreted, and objects such as rune stones will be presented. Individual study groups can also specialise in specific epochs so that a wide variety of topics can be presented at the end of the course.
