About the course
The course will address the issue on transnational, transcultural, multilingual and transborder aspects of Finnish literature through various case studies, analyzing the category of the “national“ and its place in the history of Finnish literature.
The objective of the course is to make students acquainted with various aspects of Finland’s literature and culture in past and present, as well as to develop, in this particular context, a deeper analytical and methodological understanding of the category of “national“ literature and its role in the processes of formation of the discipline of literary history.

Biography
Viola Parente-Čapková
Dozent/Adjunct Prof. in Finnish literature and Theory of Literture, University of Turku and Charles University, Prague
Viola Parente-Čapková specializes in fin de siècle Finnish literature, namely decadence in European perspective, fin de siècle women’s writing in Europe with a focus on Finland, transnational cultural and literary networks and transnational reception of women’s writing, theoretical issues in literary history, feminist literary theory, postcolonial theory, intermediality and digital humanities. She is currently leading two research projects: Texts on the Move: Reception of Women’s Writing in Finland and Russia 1840-2020 (funded by the Emil Aaltonen Foundation), and Struck by the Unknown: Fiction as a Promoter of the Finnish Language among Adults with Im/migrant Background (funded by the KONE Foundation).
Anne-Katrin Heinen
Anne-Katrin Heinen studied Scandinavian Studies, German Studies and History in Cologne and Stockholm. In 2011–2012 she was a visiting doctoral student at the Department of Art History, Uppsala University, with a guest scholarship from the Swedish Institute. In 2013, she co-initiated the project Collaborative E-Learning in Rare Subjects, now j o l n e s - Joint Learning in Northern European Studies at the Department of Scandinavian and Finnish Studies, University of Cologne, where she has been working as a research assistant ever since.
